Simulation Project Leaders Meeting 19-April-2011 ==== Attendees (virtual meeting) John Apostolakis (JA), Andrea Dotti (AD), Alfredo Ferrari (AF), Witold Pokorski (WP), Pere Mato (PM), Rob Veenhof (RV), Gabriele Cosmo (GC). --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==== Minutes --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==== Simulation physics validation & framework - Andrea - Meetings o The next LCG Physics Validation Meeting is scheduled for April 27th. The main focus of the meeting will be the validation of Geant4 9.4 with test-beam data from LHC experiments. - Activities o The issue reported from CMS at last SL meeting (decrease of 1-3% of the visible energy, not reproduced on simplified setup) for G4 9.4 is closed. The problem was probably due a mis-configuration of the jobs. o The LCG Physics Validation web-site has been re-designed and integrated within the PH/SFT group websites. The most important change is the creation of a new section "Results and Plots" which will contain plots of the comparison with LHC data and validation plots. The web-site will be presented at the next LCG Physics Validation meeting and contacts with relevant people from experiments will be made to populate the pages. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==== Generator services - Witek - GENSER: o New generators and packages installed: toprex-4.23, alpgen-2.1.4, hydjet-1.7, agile-1.2.2, tauola++-1.0.4, pythia6-425.2, hijing-1.36.a.2, vincia-1.0.25, hydjet++-2.1, hepmcanalysis-3.4, evtgenlhc-10.0, rivet-1.5.0. o The GENSER Drupal-based web page has replaced the old one; it is now the official page. Some further polishing needs to be done. o Started migration of GENSER CVS repository to SVN. o The HepMC Analysis Tool-based tests are now used regularly for new generators. The results are made available on the web page. - MCPlots: o Some further development and fine-tuning of the MCPLOTs web page has been made: new analysis added, sub-menus improved, etc. - Meetings: o The next Generator Services planning meeting will be taken on May 11th. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==== Fluka - Alfredo - Fluka: o The new release, fluka2011.2, has been made on March 25th. A version running on gfortran, 64 bits, (gfortran >= 4.4) is planned for the current week. o Among the many new features of this release, to note: * Stopping power models have been thoroughly reworked, and are now more precise particularly for heavy ions. In particular, the Barkas (Z^3), Bloch (Z^4), and Mott corrections have been implemented. * Nuclear stopping power is now calculated and taken into account. It matters only for heavy ions at low energies, however it is an essential prerequisite for NIEL and DPA calculations. * Radiation damage can now be computed and scored. * The Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect has been extended to pair production (it was already active for bremsstrahlung). * The lower limit for photon transport has been lowered to 100 eV. * Several improvements in the hadron-nucleus event generators have been implemented. * Nuclear deexcitation by photon emission makes use of an extended database of known levels and transitions. The evaporation stage is also consistent with this database. * The Boltzmann Master Equation, BME, model for heavy ion interactions at low-medium energies is now included in the distributed version. It can handle all projectiles with A>=4 on all targets, with the exception of systems lighter than (alpha, 6Li). BME is invoked for projectile energies lower than 125 MeV/A, however its limit of validity is 150 MeV/A. * Several new options are now available in order to define spatially distributed sources. Check the manual for the description of the FLOOD, CART-VOL, SPHE-VOL, and CYLI-VOL option in the BEAMPOS card. * Pre-built source routines for special cases are now supported under the SPECSOUR card. The first one allows an easy setup of colliding beam interactions. * A pre-built source routine, also available under SPECSOUR, and related auxiliary files and examples, can simulate atmospheric showers from cosmic rays and Solar Particle Events (see the manual for details). * A new body, a generic quadric QUA, has been introduced in the geometry. * Geometry transformations: directives allowing roto-translations and expansions for sets of bodies are now available in geometry. They can be applied also to the voxel part, when existing. * The "sophisticated" Compton scattering, including electron binding and Doppler effects is now activated by default for "defaults" CALORIME, PRECISIO, EM-CASCA, or HADROTHE. * A few compounds of dosimetric interest are now available as pre- defined materials, see the manual for details. * Additional material have been included in the low energy neutron library, some materials have been reworked from newer evaluations, and several materials are now available at 430 K. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==== Geant4 - John - Ongoing developments: o Added E/p checking limits to hadronic models to enable automatic checking of energy non-conservation in all theoretical models. o First comparisons of INUCL Bertini interfaced with precise de-excitation (in place of its own simplified INUCL de-excitation). o Participated in mini-workshop in Madrid on status and improvement of low-energy neutrons in Geant4. Data libraries in the G4NDL format with data from the recent ENDF VII.0, JEFF 3.1 and other libraries are being prepared. Identified issues which require further study involving the influence of neutron data and the detailed material composition on lateral shower shape. o Identified several small stability issues from extended testing of ref-03 development release. Prepared fixes for the majority of issues, in Bertini and BIC. Remaining issue, in CHIPS, is under investigation. o Refined modeling of anti-nucleon nucleon interactions in FTF, which is the basis for the interactions of light anti-ion with nuclei, requested by ALICE. Improved probability of Delta creation in pbar-p interactions and cross section of "annihilation" with multi-particle production (into 4, 5, 6 and 7 pions). o Integrated retuned model of electron Multiple Scattering, which improves sampling of tail of angular distribution and lateral displacement; provided by L.Urban (G4AI). - Support: o Made first fixes in physics list for light anti-ion physics required by ALICE, including missing processes for tritons. o Investigated report of exception in K0-long interactions from ATLAS, but could not reproduce it. Code inspection led to a fix in the de-excitation of the products of Fermi break-up. o Comparisons in simple calorimeter setups show stability of response, resolution and shower shape between 9.4.p01 and the development releases of the last three months (ref03). - Training courses & Meetings: o The planned developments for 2011 were presented at the last Technical Forum on March 3rd; the detailed summary is available from the Geant4 web site (http://geant4.cern.ch/support/planned_features.shtml). o Tutorial at CENBG (Bordeaux), on 26-29 April. o Training Event on Calorimetry in HEP at DESY (Zeuthen), 10-13 May. o Tutorial at University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), 14-18 May. o Course at the 8th National School of Software for Nuclear, sub-nuclear and Applied Physics at Porto Conte (Alghero, Italy), 6-10 June. o SASc-ISOLDE Workshop on Geant4 in Bratislava (Slovakia), 9-12 October. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==== Garfield - Rob - Among the activities going on in the past weeks to mention: o Collaboration with LXcat on noble gas elastic cross-sections. o De-excitation via VUV study, now submitted for publication. o Starting study on IR de-excitation on noble gases, relevant for feedback. o Updates on Xenon ionization; updated cross-sections and started Penning study. o High-energy cross-sections now allows for estimation of W and F for pure gases match and predictions can be made for Penning mixtures. o Microscopic tracking in Micromegas is now complete and the study is now submitted for publication. o Microscopic tracking in GEMs with B field is ongoing. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==== AOB Next meeting scheduled for June 28th.
